Suddenly it went public. Kobe Bryant said during the Nike Asia Tour press conference held at the Manila Pen last July 13, 2011 that he heard about the invite. Finally, it was all over the place. Tickets were sold out. Patron seats were selling at PhP25,000.00 while the Nose Bleed seats were selling at PhP 900.00 in the black market. On game day, Araneta Coliseum opened its windows to sell Upper A at Standing Room Only for PhP1,500.00.
There have been visits by notable NBA Superstars, past and present, but none of this magnitude. The Philippines has been ignored far too long for a shot at an NBA game but thanks to the resources Manny V. Pangilinan thru the MVP Sports Foundation, his team of sports enthusiasts made a bold statement and has accomplished what was deemed, the impossible.

They have made every basketball loving Filipino ‘s dream come true – to watch the best and brightest NBA players on their home floor.

For two consecutive days, excitement was everywhere. Some fans entered the coliseum with jerseys of their favorite player, most of them spectators, who follow the NBA, but some of them are as rabid as they can be. They filled the coliseum wearing their passion and admiration that is anything and everything about the NBA.

Children, teens, couples, mom, dad, grandpa, and celebrities were all captivated by their mere presence. Especially during thier pre-game shoot around, the likes of Chris Paul, arguably the best point guard in the planet, the youngest NBA MVP, Derrick Rose. Oklahoma City Thunder and fastest rising NBA Superstar, Kevin Durant with teammate James “Fear the Beard” Harden and 5-Time NBA Champion and future NBA Hall of famer, Kobe Bryant will play alongside, 3rd Year NBA veteran JaVale McGee of the Washington Wizards, 2nd Year NBA Veteran Tyreke Evans of the Sacramento Kings, NBA rookie from the University of Arizona Wildcats Derrick Willams of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and senior veteran from the LA Lakers Derek Fisher, appeared like curtain call. You see the smile and awe on their face. For a typical basketball fan, it was absolutely a weekend to remember. A once in a lifetime opportunity to watch the best players of the world, not as individuals on a promo tour, but together, as a team.

Fans were left in utter amusement on their first day as they were treated to an NBA style spectacle, For the 1st time, Chants of Kobe!!!, CP3!!! and MVP!!! were heard from Filipino Fans. It didn’t matter if the score ended with a shameful 26-point loss for the PBA selection. Who are we kidding, these are the best of the best were playing. What matters is that the fans got what they paid for, an unforgettable NBA charged event.

For the Smart Gilas team, it was a different story. It's a chance for our National Basketball team to shine, because the FIBA Asia Tournament is just around the corner and this game might be their yardstick. Smart Gilas Head Coach Rajko Toroman was seen touring the basketball court during the All-Stars shoot around relaxed but anxious.

After the ceremonial toss, the atmosphere was feverish. In the 1st quarter, after Japeth Aguilar tied the ball game at 6-all, a Kobe Bryant 3-pointer and a Kevin Durant slam made it a 7-point lead for the All-Stars, 13-6. Tyreke Evans had back to back baskets including a steal off JV Casio to finish the 1st 10 minutes of action with a 12-point lead, 28-16.

In the 2nd Quarter, Mac Baracael, Marcio Lassiter, including a Dondon Hontiveros 3-pointer at the 7:15 minute mark kept the Nationals in striking distance but the combination of athleticism, size and uncanny quickness and hand speed of the All-Stars overwhelmed the Smart Gilas Team.

Now seen and experienced live, we were able to verify, right before our very eyes the level of NBA Basketball. It was by definition a formal cognizance why they are the best in the business. At the end of the 1st half, the All-Stars had the biggest lead of the ballgame at 22-points.

Early in the 4th period with the game in motion, another certified superstar entered the basketball court. It was Manny Pacquiao. Kobe approached the All-time boxing great after a timeout in a fighting stance to acknowledge his presence. Afterwards, as a gesture of respect from one great athlete to another, Pacquiao approached the All-Stars bench only to be taunted by Chris Paul saying that he can last 15 seconds in the ring with one of the greatest fighters of all time.

Midway thru the 4th quarter, things started to get interesting. The Nationals were able to hold their own with their deficit down to just 8-points but it wasn’t enough to keep up with the All-Stars impeccable basketball prowess.

As the buzzer sounded, CP3, Rose, Durant, KB24 and the rest showed their appreciation to the thousands of fans that trooped to the coliseum by giving away their jerseys and game shoes. Some got away with photos while others got hold of autographs as memorabilia.

The games’ best players had a glimpse of our love for the game as well as our hospitality. Thanks to the MVP Sports Foundation, the Philippines has been given the opportunity to audition for the NBA Calendar of overseas games. Fans here are definitely ready for more – NBA Action.

Photos by: Michael G. First was the Super Natural Tour. Then in 2009, as an NBA and Olympic Champion, he came back in such a very spirited mood, for his Asia Tour.

With the current NBA lockout, he returns as his usual self, Black Mamba style. Eloquent, poised, a true ambassador of the game, he answered every question like a true hall of famer, including a confirmation about an invite to come back and play against the Smart Gilas Philippine National team, saying he has heard of it but has yet to be given the formal solicitation.

Patricia Bermudez-Hizon did an excellent job helping Kobe dodge those sensitive NBA lockout inquiries, GREAT JOB Patricia!!!

After his GK stint in Taguig, Kobe with entourage in tow, proceeded to Nike's Bonifacio High Street Branch to meet and greet thousands of Kobe and Lakers fans that waited thru the scorching heat of noontime to witness, right before their very eyes, a demi-god in motion.

To cap off his visit at the BHS, Nike Elite Basketballs with his autograph were up for grabs. One of my camera crew who was, in the right place and time, able to gain possession of one of those future e-bay jewels.

Then at the Araneta Coliseum, Media and Kobe diehards converged and were treated in Black Mamba spectacle, wherein as a final send-off, Kobe wore a Nike FEU jersey (same fighting colors as the Lakers) to play with the Nike UAAP All-Stars against the Smart Gilas Nationals for the next 8-minute extension.

Trailing by a double digit margin after 10 minutes of Nike action, Greg Slaughter muffed a possible slam or lay-in off a Black Mamba assist in the final two minutes. That sequence could've cut the lead down to just two points and a possible Black Mamba classic moment.

It was another Kobe holiday. Thank you Kobe for another memorable visit. We will see you again very soon.

Note: My Web and Events Agency, RedMedia, is preparing something special for Black Mamba Fans. I bought my Sub-Zero on sale at US$35.00 in Mervyn's, Hillsdale. While the LBJ VII was from my sister (lucky me) which she bought in downtown San Francisco for a cool US$139.00 (PhP6,255.00) AT SIZE 7, and sold in the Philippines at a retail price of PhP6,995.00 and NO SIZE 7 available (poor me).

I've been wanting to sell my Sub-Zero for a very long time. Reason for keeping this long? I just don't know, there's a reason why and I hope to find out very soon. The LBJ VII is just an awesome piece of craftsmanship. I feel like a sneakerhead by just looking and touching the darn thing but i must admit i do wanna take it for a spin on a Sunday pick up game.

But i also heard about the sleek performance of the Sub Zero. They say its ideally built for hoops running and definitely not for power players which ain't me.

The Nike LBJ VII will make look Gooood, while the Adidas Sub-Zero will help my performance. Since I used to take a part-time job teaching aerobics, I only use running to supplement my other workouts. My fitness priority was to do more Anaerobic exercises because of my love for Badminton and my passion for Basketball, two sports that require a lot energy bursts then stop, recover then go for another burst. Long distance running, for me, would hurt my knee mileage in the long run if i keep this up, and I may not play the sports I desire.

At the recent Globe Run for Home 2010, I took on the challenge to see if I can do a 10km. run. I did finish but I wasn't happy with my performance. My right leg gave way at the 7.5 Km. mark so I stretched then limped long the way, took the pain and said "What the Hell", I ran the final 1.75Km towards the finish line.

The Globe Run for Home 2010 has been, pretty much, well organized. The routes for all 5 categories were all clear, color coded signs were present, from my vantage point, no one complained of being lost. People at the water stations were efficient while they also serve free fluid replenishments.

I was so thrilled to consistently see so many people, 8,000 by my estimate, into running, especially into Fitness. A large number of Fitness First Gyms have mushroomed all over the Metro to conveniently provide the Filipino a venue to sweat, shed some pounds and be fit, for their loved ones, families, and build ones self-esteem. The number of Fitness centers is a testament, that the Filipino is fully aware on their obligations to take good care of their respective bodies. That the excuse of having "no time" to pursue their fitness goals is a thing of the past, a resolution.

I've been into fitness since college, I may not look it, I may not have those six packs that a true hardcore fitness professional possess, and when you meet or see me, never underestimate thy capacity. How's that for an ego? As far as I'm concerned, i don't want to commit the same mistake about other people.

I just hope that in the next fitness fad cycle, or maybe our appetite for fitness might evolve into another product. But one thing I can share about my experiences since fitness became part of mine is that consistency is always key to make fitness a vital function of our lifestyle.

The Tuna Run has lots of fan fare but has less substance

For my 1st 5Km. run, I clocked in at 41 minutes with a nagging injury to my right patella i got from playing in our usual Sunday church basketball in Dasmarinas Village. Arguably the most popular running events, the Century Tuna Superbods run has been heavily promoted and as it turned out, it generated over 10,000 runners, from what I've gathered, that's far less than the number of participants of the Milo Marathon event.

The Tuna Run, aptly my shortened name for this running event, in my view is really not an event for the serious runner. With models posing as water stations staff, hoping that their presence and beautiful looks will matter to give you that 2nd or 3rd wind in the race, not to mention the fact that they are using plastic cups as a substitute for the environmentally accepted paper kind, the event has a party atmosphere to showcase more of your good looks and nice outfits than how you run the race. It is actually a running event if you "want to be seen".

I registered on-line on February 12, 2010, paid the fees with a site notice that the package will be given to me before the February 19, 2010. Still no package 24 hours till Gun time. Good thing I was able to find on run day the persons responsible for the bib and time chip and they gave me back the Php 100.00 delivery charge on the package. But that was still close. We have the tools to communicate to our customers directly and the organizers didn't use them. I didn't receive any SMS notice or bulletin about how I am going to proceed if ever I do not have my package.

To maximize media promotion of the product, the marathon has 4 running events, which included a confidence builder 3k event. You can just imagine the sheer volume of runners if you combine both participants from the lesser distance events. Normal practice dictates that you start the longer distance first, which was scheduled to begin at 5:20am (kinda late isn't it?), then the next at 5:35am and so forth. The schedule caused a lot of confusion to a lot of runners. Some 5k runners accidentally went to the 10k run, while some 10k participants invaded the 21k space. The organizers packed a lot of bodies in a limited usable road cover.

After the race, and with a handful still running the 21k at around 6:30am, the runners were sent to a large area to receive your goodies, giveaways, and ego shirts from the sponsors. But the limited sight of the claiming booths lessened the throughput time for the event staff to fulfill the claim thus creating a such a long line with an average standing period of 30, 45 minutes close to an hour, but I gotta hand it to Century Tuna and its sponsors, there was bottomless snacks and loot bags for all.

With all the glamor and publicity put into "The Run of the Century", the organizers has a lot of work to do to gain form and fulfill its event promise. Still, a lot of people benefited from the event. Century Tuna is becoming a great contributor in the awareness of a fit and healthy lifestyle.

Isla - a beach bar and restaurant within city limits

ISLA. But in my opinion, pro basketball, though watched by millions all over the country and has probably the best players of the country gathered together in one league, it lacked the luster, passion and spirit that collegiate basketball can offer. Collegiate Basketball is forever changing, there is always something new – new issues, new players, new personalities. Each season is a blast.

Every broadcast journalist dreams of having that shot of calling the pro game. And why not, it offered all the perks and fame plus the credibility. But it will be a long, long, long time for some of us in the industry to fit into the places currently occupied by these broadcast veterans.
Our journey towards taking this niche started in Season 67 of the UAAP, and you fellas ever read my previous blog, you will know exactly how this piece of the puzzle fit.

When uaapgames.com became dormant, some of us thought that the opportunity will only go to waste if we didn't continue this adventure. I've talked to Kim Lesaca and Charlie Cuna several times about the idea of creating another website exclusively for College Basketball without the “official” branding to go with it. Which means, we can say whatever we want without the fear of censorship. In other words, it will be coated with opinions with the responsibility and ethics of a journalist.

Redmedia, a company that I co-owned with eventrepreneur Ronald “The Don” Lucero, initially specializes in Relationship Marketing. We brought in an additional head to our company, Yehey.com's grandfather, Dave Quitoriano, to spearhead the creation of the site. To design the website, we sought the help as a partner of rising photographer, Jorem Catilo.

Together, merging our knowledge and credibility of the College Game with Marketing and Technology savvy, we decided to name the site as inboundpass.com.

Inboundpass.com was launched in December 2006 with its black, grey and orange theme. It's first site content was the NAASCU finals. Kim, Charlie and myself thought of accelerating the site's popularity by bringing in a very one-sided, opinionated and willing to take the punches from any side. That was when I met the Green Mind – Tony L. Atayde.

Sometime after the 1st quarter of 2007, we got a tip that there was an ineligible player in the UST Growling Tigers line-up that will suit up for Season 70. Since we are no longer an official site of the UAAP, this is an opportunity for us to create that buzz we needed to be known as a source for controversial issues. We mobilized our correspondent Josef Ramos to investigate the matter and lucky for us, Josef was able to give us documents to prove that this player can no longer play in Season 70.

That player was Jojo Duncil. And from that moment on, inboundpass has started to make some headway into mainstream collegiate basketball.

Since then, more and more people flock to the site searching for more meat. It's site traffic grew tremendously, with every columnist sharing his own opinion on any matter related to college hoops, Inboundpass.com became an instant hit to those who have no time to come to the venue and watch their favorite team. Inboundpass suddenly became mainstream.

Using the Social Media concept, the beta season opener of Inboundpass was equipped with original content, exclusive photos documenting the emotion of College Basketball, blogs, RSS, AJAX, were employed. But as the season went along, we decided to create our own video archive to give that rich and authentic feel of the game never seen on the games' exclusive TV network.

Inboundpass.com has proved that the Internet will soon replace traditional media as THE main source of information especially for College Basketball news and highlights.

Inboundpass.com, in its maiden season, has established itself as the controversial source for Philippine College Hoops Mania.

How I became a Sports Journalist?

I've always loved the game of basketball. The grit, the grind, the dynamics, the teamwork, the physical and emotional aches and pains, the total package. I've always wanted to be involved with the game in any capacity. Luckily, in our pick up games in Dasmarinas Village, I've played with 5 among the 50 greatest PBA players of all time, including legendary imports such as Bobby Parks and Mr. 100% Norman Black and other well-known pros that are now coaching collegiate teams. I am so honored to have played with these guys in my lifetime.

So a window opened when a phone call from Noel Zarate came for an invitation to attend a Center Sports Communications (CSC) Seminar. So I did. I am a member of CSC Batch 8 that includes Pia Boren, Mica Abesamis, NCAA Barker Edwin Logina and Gretchen Malalad. From there, I've met my esteemed colleague in Kim Lesaca including Boyet Sison and Charlie Cuna.

At that time, everybody wanted to work in the broadcast booth of the PBA including Radio and as an aspiring sportscaster, who wouldn't? But there was no room, it was a full house. You have to fall in line with the rest for any position. A writing job was posted in our e-groups for the UAAP's official website – uaapgames.com. Our task was to write for a specific school of our liking. But I'm a red-blooded Bedan so I should be in the NCAA and why in the hell am I doing in the UAAP? A sportswriters challenge is to take on something that you are indifferent, and this was it. A Bedan in the UAAP. But hey, it is still basketball.

Covering the UE Red Warriors on Season 67 was my 1st ever assignment in College Basketball, though I've been following my Alma Mater's, the UAAP I should say was my first ever taste of real college hoops coverage.

It was easy for me to establish a relationship with the Red Warriors because Dindo Pumaren was my classmate from Grade School till High School in San Beda College. I knew what was goin on, and since I understand the game, I how to read the game plan and express it on paper. It was a first time for both of us. It was Dindo's first year Head Coach so goes with mine. It was a mutually beneficial relationship and I owe it to Dindo for my growth as a sports journalist. He made me understand the difficulties of coaching and the beauty of the game.

My exposure with the Red Warriors, as a fan in the NCAA and my familiarity with other UAAP teams made me an instant shoo-in for the 1st ever broadcast of the Collegiate Champions League in 2005. After years in the basement as a trial league, it now deserves its place in the airwaves. Thanks to Noel Zarate and Tin Tin Gamboa, my chance to be in the mainstream media as an analyst has been fulfilled. I was my first taste of the real thing. And that stint carried thru to my other inserts in the Global Destiny Basketball League and the 2006 National Basketball Conference.

An experience with America's Favorite Pastime

I am, indeed, a certified basketball fan. No doubt about it. But when my niece bought me a ticket to watch a baseball game, after all, its an experience i will surely cherish. Besides, baseball is in my list as of one my spectator sports to watch in case the basketball season is over.

We watched the San Francisco Giants vs. the Detroit Tigers with the Giants playing host at the AT & T Park in San Francisco California on June 17, 2008. Instead of beating the traffic for the 715pm first pitch and spend US$30.00 for parking, we took the CALTrain from Hillsdale into the City for US4.00 each. Bleachers area tickets cost US$8.00 and since the park is situated by the pier and embarcadero area, you definitely need to be prepared for the cold breeze.

The park is designed, and like any baseball park for that matter, to be a huge staging area of one of America's most popular sports. The park is ideal for watching what its meant for. Good seat spacing for leg and elbow room to eat. Areas to stretch out and meet and greets. Lots of families, friends and even employees of companies that own an exclusive room (a.k.a. box) use the venue for bonding time, fun and laughter.

Lots of areas to grab food and souvenirs so you dont have to worry about long lines. Restrooms are all over for an efficient person to cubicle ratio. A help desk if you have questions on anything related to your situation within the park. Bottomline, I wish our basketball venue planners, contractors and architects would consider customer satisfaction ahead of profits by sacrificing space for comfort and spectator experience.

I'm sure you've heard of the traditional hotdogs and cracker jacks being sold during baseball games which cost a minimum US$5.00 for each purchase. When we left, the one thing that stuck in my mind was THE must try Gilroy's Garlic French Fries at US$4.00 each, its All-American, all the way.

Getting out was the longest short haul train ride of our lives. We got out of the park, got the train tickets but waited for 45 minutes at the station with a ride that had many stops. But overall, its an experience of a lifetime.

Let’s hope Impossible is Nothing for Agent 0 visit

It is no longer a rumor that Agent 0, better known in the NBA as one of the most eccentric, colorful and cocky players the league has ever seen - Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards.

The showers during haftime breaks and his regular rantings in the blogosphere about other teams, players and himself is very well documented.
In a recent conversation with Adidas Philippines Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager, Ms. Odette Velarde, "Mr. Arenas has been scheduled to visit Manila this July (2008)". She also added, "that no itinerary has been set for his visit". I asked Ms. Velarde if Mr. Arenas will grace an Ateneo - La Salle game since the league schedule has been projected, though still subject to change, to have this rivalry unfold another time this July 6, 2008, she said that Mr. Arena's will likely drop by and grab a seat to watch the Blue Eagles and Green Archers go at it in the 1st round of the elimination series.

The Blue Eagles and the Green Archers will be officially outfitted by Adidas. The La Salle and Ateneo Community can also buy their favorite Tees and jackets under the Adidas brand. Branding and school spirit will now be part of a whole new tradition.

The buzz about his arrival has been reported by the print media some months ago. But Ms. Velarde cautioned that the anticipation might, and we hope not, turn into an utter disappointment. These are million dollar babies we are talking about. With their high aptitude for the game of basketball, aside from their family, Corporations, Organizations, and a Franchise depend on them for their appeal, persona and for what they stand for. So any domestic problems we encounter might affect the outcome of the planned event.

Ms. Velarde cited the initial plans of Tracy McGrady's visit to the country. Although T-Mac's sojourn pushed thru, his visit was marred by speculation and doubt on T-Mac's safety in the country once he sets foot on Philippine soil that is why . For now, much like a party, its better to surprise ourselves that plan for a well executed festival.

From Zero to hero is Gilbert Arena's main theme. Even before he got drafted in the NBA, Agent 0 has struggled throughout his career. He had to prove to himself and to everybody that he was the real deal. That is why during his visit here, he is also scheduled to meet with kids to give hope and inspiration to pursue their dream no matter what the obstacle. Impossible is Nothing.

In T-Mac's case, his was defaced with a potential Mayon Volcano explosion so Sebastian Telfair had to take his place, but better late than never, T-Mac had a great time during his stay here.

So far the sky is clear for Agent 0 to land safely in Manila. Unless a sleeping giant of a problem awakens, but until then, we will wait with great expectations.

A Korean speaks out about the current state of the Pearl of the Orient

For so many years since EDSA I we have sought hope that everything would change - our values, the way we govern, the way we relate with our fellow brother, our ethical standards. But change starts from within. As of now, a the rate things are going, we haven't rid ourselves of the habits that led to that day in 1986, were we rose in a non-violent struggle to what we think is an abusive and corrupt regime. Now we are again on a crossroad.

Koreans have been our top draw tourists, surpassing the Americans and Europeans in numbers that visit us each year. The Koreans obviously came here to learn probably our 2nd language - English. You can see them almost everywhere, not only in the most common tourist spots, but EVERYWHERE. I got this email from a friend but please forgive the english. It takes an outsider to write and tell us in this essay of what they think about our condition, how they care and thier concern about what we are going thru. Please read, so we can all get a reality check.

MY SHORT ESSAY ABOUT THE PHILIPPINES
by Jaeyoun Kim

Filipinos always complain about the corruption in the Philippines . Do you really think the corruption is the problem of the Philippines ? I do not think so. I strongly believe that the problem is the lack of love for the Philippines .

Let me first talk about my country, Korea . It might help you understand my point. After the Korean War, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. Koreans had to start from scratch because entire country was destroyed after the Korean War, and we had no natural resources.

Koreans used to talk about the Philippines , for Filipinos were very rich in Asia. We envy Filipinos. Koreans really wanted to be well off like Filipinos. Many Koreans died of famine. My father & brother also died because of famine. Korean government was very corrupt and is still very corrupt beyond your imagination, but Korea was able to develop dramatically because Koreans really did their best for the common good with their heart burning with patriotism.

Koreans did not work just for themselves but also for their neighborhood and country. Education inspired young men with the spirit of patriotism.

40 years ago, President Park took over the government to reform Korea . He tried to borrow money from other countries, but it was not possible to get a loan and attract a foreign investment because the economic situation of South Korea was so bad. Korea had only three factories. So, President Park sent many mine workers and nurses to Germany so that they could send money to Korea to build a factory. They had to go through horrible experience.

In 1964, President Park visited Germany to borrow money. Hundred of Koreans in Germany came to the airport to welcome him and cried there as they saw the President Park . They asked to him, 'President, when can we be well off?' That was the only question everyone asked to him. President Park cried with them and promised them that Korea would be well off if everyone works hard for Korea , and the President of Germany got the strong impression on them and
lent money to Korea . So, President Park was able to build many factories in Korea . He always asked Koreans to love their country from their heart.

Many Korean scientists and engineers in the USA came back to Korea to help developing country because they wanted their country to be well off. Though they received very small salary, they did their best for Korea . They always hoped that their children would live in well off country.

My parents always brought me to the places where poor and physically handicapped people live. They wanted me to understand their life and help them. I also worked for Catholic Church when I was in the army. The only thing I learned from Catholic Church was that we have to love our neighborhood. And, I have loved my neighborhood. Have you cried for the Philippines ? I have cried for my country several times. I also cried for the Philippines because of so many poor people. I have been to the New Bilibid prison. What made me sad in the prison were the prisoners who do not have any love for their country. They go to mass and work for Church. They pray everyday.

However, they do not love the Philippines. I talked to two prisoners at the maximum-security compound, and both of them said that they would leave the Philippines right after they are released from the prison. They said that they would start a new life in other countries and never come back to the Philippines.

Many Koreans have a great love for Korea so that we were able to share our wealth with our neighborhood. The owners of factory and company were distributed their profit to their employees fairly so that employees could buy what they needed and saved money for the future and their children.

When I was in Korea, I had a very strong faith and wanted to be a priest. However, when I came to the Philippines, I completely lost my faith. I was very confused when I saw many unbelievable situations in the Philippines . Street kids always make me sad, and I see them everyday. The Philippines is the only Catholic country in Asia , but there are too many poor people here. People go to church every Sunday to pray, but nothing has been changed.

My parents came to the Philippines last week and saw this situation. They told me that Korea was much poorer than the present Philippines when they were young. They are so sorry that there are so many beggars and street kids. When we went to Pasangjan, I forced my parents to take a boat because it would fun. However, they were not happy after taking a boat. They said that they would not take the boat a gain because they were sympathized the boatmen, for the boatmen were very poor and had a small frame. Most of people just took a boat and enjoyed it. But, my parents did not enjoy it because of love for them.

My mother who has been working for Catholic Church since I was very young told me that if we just go to mass without changing ourselves, we are not Catholic indeed. Faith should come with action. She added that I have to love Filipinos and do good things for them because all of us are same and have received a great love from God. I want Filipinos to love their neighborhood and country as much as they love God so that the Philippines will be well off.

I am sure that love is the keyword, which Filipinos should remember. We cannot change the sinful structure at once. It should start from person. Love must start in everybody, in a s mall scale and have to grow. A lot of things happen if we open up to love. Let's put away our prejudices and look at our worries with our new eyes.

I discover that every person is worthy to be loved. Trust in love, because it makes changes possible. Love changes you and me. It changes people, contexts and relationships. It changes the world. Please love your neighborhood and country.

Jesus Christ said that whatever we do to others we do to Him. In the Philippines, there is God for people who are abused and abandoned. There is God who is crying for love. If you have a child, teach them how to love the Philippines . Teach them why they have to love their neighborhood and country. You already know that God also will be very happy if you love others.

That's all I really want to ask you Filipinos.

(FOR THE LOVE OF OUR COUNTRY PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE...)

PLDT MyDSL is still more reliable

Are you a PLDT MyDSL victim? Yes but I only complain about it after 5PM. If you are a MyDSL user, more often you will experience a slow down in your internet connection at this hour because people at the office are stressed and would like to relax by surfing the internet.

People by this hour are just killing time and ready to go home, and this is the only time they could catch up with their latest or favorite interest on the Internet. That's understandable and you, me and everyone can't help but to click your favorite browser after a day of banging heads with tons of workload.

But mind you, MyDSL is still the most reliable deal out there. I use Bayantel DSL that comes bundled with my landline. But in most occasions, I find my connection to be intermittent. It sometimes just fades and then gone for a moment and the connection starts pumping in again. And this goes on and on in most days.

The next most tolerable DSL connection , after MyDSL, is from Globelines.
Also intermittent but does not cut you connection. The worst broadband connection is Smart Bro, definitely a downer, very unreliable, both of my colleagues just gave it up, they surrendered.

Value For Money Japanese Restaurant

14 pcs. of Teka Maki at PhP90.00, 14 pcs. of California Maki at PhP90.00, Mixed Special Sushi at Php120.00? Worse is some establishments will charge you Php50.00 per hour when you charge your power cell. So here are some practical sites you can go to in case you need a Wifi service.

The Lina Group (owner of Airfreight 2100) has done a good job in reviving the Burger King franchise. Known for - The Whopper, plus you can also try the Hershey Pie, Burger King also has movie screenings daily every 2PM. There are outlets scattered in strategic places so you can stay longer. You can also charge you mobile phone when you need a boost for those important calls and SMS.

If you want a more comfortable atmosphere with a large TV screen with your favorite sports in tow, you can check out the National Sports Grille (NSG) at the 3rd Floor of Greenbelt 3. Try order the San Francisco Burger, their wide selection of pasta dishes and their famous chicken wings.

If you are in the Greenhills area, Krispy Krème would be a good location for those on the go. In this business, it really takes guts, it really takes an open mind to see thru people. And most of all, one should take care of their integrity.

8. Be pleasant. Make all talk. Be humble. After all, you don’t know everything, A you need help, or you wouldn’t be there. And you should try to be sympathetic, when it’s merited. Try to be a friend - but always remember you are a reporter.

Don't be judgemental. Whatever your source says and if you don't agree with it, look for other sources that may jive with your own opinion, but remember just keep this to yourself. You don't have to be vocal about your own opinion. Stick to being a journalist.

9. Remember the obvious question: That’s not as easy at its sounds. You can get caught up in the small talk, the story-telling, the new angles, the listening, the good humor and charm of source. But remember what you came for. Identify the questions before you go in, and keep working on it, keep asking. If people ignore or evade your key questions, or lead you down another trail, you have to come back. Reword your question, rephrase it ask it in different ways, as many times as you must until you do have an answer that’s understandable believable.

Normally, when you are in a press conference, when you keep things as comfortable as possible, everybody tends to relax and lay back a bit. Don't get caught up with that, especially if you are talking about an issue or an exciting sports event and people would really want to hear the real scoop. Really listen and read thru the angles. The person in the podium might say some words that might mean something.

10. Challenge your sources. Contradict them a little. Don’t accept the easy explanation. Say you don’t understand, say it doesn’t make sense from what you know from other people. Ask them, "How can you be certain?" Let them prove it to you - with more details, other names, any documents.

Contradict just a little. Remember you are not them and you are trying to understand their situation. In sports, winning and losing have different emotions so you better be sensitive to the moment.

ll. Never trust your source, at least not completely. Double - check. Look not only for corroboration, but also for contradictions, for evidence to the contrary. Not even your best source has a perfect memory.

This is absolutely true. Sometimes the very main source will mislead you or give you a made up story, maybe to test your trust factor. But in any case, make sure that you get clarify and confirm if the story is true or you will end up in a lot of trouble. This happened to me actually when my trusted source told me a wild and sad story about his franchise player, though I suspected it not to be true coz I see and talk to him most of the time during games and practice, still I didn't not get the keyboard out and type the story. As it turned out, it wasn't true.

12. Don’t socialize with reporters all the time. Socialize with people whose stories have not already been print. Remember all the friends you ever met. Sometimes the person you once dated in college will grow up to be a top official of the Justice Department. Never underestimate any one as a potential source.

Bottomline is, always be nice to people each day. It really pays to be nice.

13. If you want to protect your sources, don’t tell anyone, particularly your fellow reporters who are (with the exception of you) the worst blabbermouths in the world. If you want a sensitive source to talk with you, he or she has to decide whether to trust you. And your word must be golden. A bad reputation will quickly ruin even the best reporter.

If you hear another story, let's say by accident, from someone other than your source, it's great to hear them, fine. That's their prerogative. Just do not tell them that you have something. It's not you don't want to share or anything, it's just a matter of courtesy to your source that he told you something. They talked to you.

14. You set the rules, and you clarify the terms on which you’re talking. If this is background, or not-for-attribution, make certain you and the source have same definitions of that, and recognize that the information will be used. It’s up to you to avoid misunderstanding. Spell out the terms, if necessary, at the outset so you both understand them. Don’t take off-the-record information — that’s unusable in any form, and let your sources know that. Most of them want to tell you something anyway, and will do so, at the least, on a background basis that allows you to pursue confirmation elsewhere. Don’t let the source change the rules at the end of the evening. Your job is to tell stories to the public, not to your grandchildren someday.

It sounds, looks simple to set the tone especially if its a sensitive issue. You can arm yourself with a questionnaire if you want, my advice is to keep it as simple as possible and make your source some more.

15. Give your worst enemy a fair shake. Always give someone his or her best defense in the printed story. Even if you don’t believe it, let the readers have a chance to judge for themselves. You may earn the person’s respect. He or she may even tell you the full story later on.

Definitely, you will hear varying opinions about a certain issue. This happened to me when i heard both sides talk about their stand on a player eligibility issue. The player came from the same school that I went to but as a reporter/columnist, you should learn how to detach yourself from your loyalty to your alma mater or institution and give your best presentation on the matter as possible. Let public opinion stand out.

16. Be cruel. This is the unwritten rule. When all is done but not yet said - let the facts fall where they may. You have no friend now. You are a reporter – tell the truth. But don’t pass judgment on people unnecessarily. You’re a reporter, not GOD. Let the people’s deeds speak for themselves.

Just present the facts and if you have some emotional attachments to the people surrounding the story, don't let it get in the way.

17. Always say thank you at the end of the day. Go back when the story is over and say thank you again. Say thank you to sources even when nothing is happening. An honest thank you is as rare and as encouraging as a good listener.

You don't have to send them a gift either. Just do your job and be a responsible journalist.

18. Keep trying. Keep working. It is the drudgery of making sure of details that uncovers the unexpected. A sage of this profession has said, "I’ve met a lot of lucky reporters. I’ve never known a single lazy lucky reporter."

In this line of work, there are no shortcuts. If you think you are not successful, be patient, your time will come.

A 2 cents guide to would be reporters, Part I

I myself is a graduate of the Center for Sportscommunication or CSC, batch 8. Among my classmates were NCAA Courtside reporter Pia Boren, Solar Courtside Mica Abesamis and ABS-CBN Reporter Gretchen Malalad.

I was among them that made an entry into this industry by being a Basketball Analyst for the Global Destiny Basketball League, the National Basketball Conference (NBC), and the 2005 edtition of the Collegiate Champions League (CCL). It was an experience to work with such pros like Noel Zarate, Boyet Sison, Coach Jude Roque, Coach Aboy Castro, Coach Luigi Trillo, and many many more.

Now, I have ventured into the new media business - the Internet. And have co-created www.inboundpass.com, dedicated to Philippine College Basketball, with great personalities like Kim Lesaca, Charlie Cuna, Tony Atayde, Chris Soler, Josef Ramos and Coach Jude Roque. We had our occassional bumps on the road but we managed to pull thru.

I know a lot of coaches in College Basketball. We talk a lot about the game and about the stars and sites. And since we talk, we share some information that somehow might affect thier careers and most of all my relationship with them.

When I assisted Noel Zarate and Coach Jude during the 1st Sportscasting workshop held in San Beda College in Mendiola, I was able to pick up this document from Bill Velasco and he discussed about research and production. It's the SOURCERY - A GUIDE TO REPORTERS.

The arcane art of getting people to tell you the truth:

l. Ask for help. If you ask people to tell you everything they know, that is a precious possession not readilv surrendered.

But people like to be asked for their help. Ask them to help you understand what is happening. That is what you want, isn’t it? You’re a little confused and lost, and you need help in figuring things out. In helping you, people just may tell you what they know.

2. Be prepared. Know what you’re talking about. Know what they’re talking about. Study the subject- and the terminology of the topic. Know what your questions are. Know what the answers could be. Don’t parade your knowledge. But use it to prompt discussion and replies.

Most coaches are very accommodating and they will understand if you tell them to take it easy on the terms.

3. Listen. Shut up and listen. A good reporter is a good listener. You shouldn’t be trying to tell people everything you know. You want to get what they know. Sometimes the best questions are "Uh-huh", "Why?", "How?", "What do you mean‘?" and "I don’t understand? The short question which keep people talking, while you keep listening.

Please do take this point seriously. To get your source their attention, you must attentively listen so you can get their trust. Trust is one of the most important commodity in this business so you have to build that relationship with your source.

4. Be honest. You want your sources to be honest with you, don’t you? Be honest with them, if you want to build mutual trust. That doesn’t mean putting everything out on a platter before the first question. But do try to be candid, rather than coy. If you’re working on a story, say so. Make people part of the way into your confidence. Maybe they will do the same for you.

5. Talk to everyone. There is no formula for finding sources. Figure out everyone who might know something about what you’re looking for. Talk to them all. Keep asking. Go back and forth. You may find a piece here, a piece there. Getting stories is akin to assembling puzzles — without knowing how many pieces there are or what the final picture may look like.

Make sure that when you put your story together, the pieces fit together. Be careful on the crumbs, they might lead you to the wrong ginger bread house.

6. See people face—to-face. You can’t look a telephone in the eye. And if you’re in someone’s office or living room, they can’t hang-up or put you on hold to call back another time when they won’t be in. In fact, few people know how to throw you out gracefully. So stay, and try to keep asking questions. Walk into an office two minutes after quitting time, when the secretary has gone but the boss with all the work to do is still there — and has no more appointments or ringing phones to interrupt him or her that hour. Show up unexpectedly. Often people will see you to find out what you want.

I always tell reporter this. To find the time to go to team practices. Observe them, learn the game, empathize with the players and just build a relationship. Believe me you will have a learning experience about the game and about hardwork and dedication.

7. Go back. Go back again and again. Keep knocking on doors. You may feel foolish, but be polite and persist. Keep asking for help. It may seem hard to ask questions when you may feel foolish, but remember one rule: the only way you’re certain of never getting the answer is to be too embarrassed to ask the question. One reporter’s axiom: "There aren’t any embarrassing questions - just embarrassing answers."

When you ask a player particularly a coach, please do make an effort to ask politely. Not like you are pointing a gun or a knife on your potential source. You have to make them feel comfortable with you. Some reporters are not sensitive to this and they just end up like a mosquito ready to suck blood from their victims. And you know how mosquitos can be annoying right?

To be continued........

San Beda College hosts 1st Sportscasting Workshop

Only 40 sportscasters are currently working in this small, fraternal world of Philippine Sports. That's according to Noel Zarate, veteran anchorman and sportscaster who has covered many sports events other than basketball.

Together with ABS-CBN NCAA Anchor and Analyst Coach Jude Roque, both have organized a workshop that will give aspiring sportscasters a chance to prepare and organize for any auditions ahead. It can also be a grassroots program to search for that rare talent, a fresh face, a fresh voice for the airwaves to carry the highlights of the ultimate reality show that is sports.

San Beda College embraced the first opportunity and sponsored the workshop to 15 ambitious men and women willing to go thru the rigourous drills to see if they have what it takes to be – a bonafide sportscaster.

Bill Velasco took center stage on the 1st day (Feb 1, 2008) of the workshop with a barage of information about being a sporscaster, trivial stuff sports, research, and production. Noel Zarate followed with a personality exercise to determine which tribe in that quadrant he drew on the whiteboard you belong. Sounds like a fun 1st day doesn't it?

Moving along the workshop for its 2nd day, Lia Cruz and George Rocha -------- Chu spearheaded the morning with a topic dedicated to being a courtside reporter. Lia and George took turns in explaining the road map and roadblocks of being the face that will hopefully light up the screen. Coach Jude Roque and Hardball's Boyet Sison (better known to our circle as Papa B.) had a dual partnership in discussing the role of a color commentator or popularly known in the Philippine sportscasting industry as the game analyst.

The third day it was all business. It's game time for these participants. This my personal favorite – Hunter's Deli located at the Mile Long arcade in Makati City. Been eating here since the early 90's. It has a small bar to accommodate you favorite drink from soda, shakes, fresh fruit juices in season to beer and other alcoholic beverages like tequila.

The must try the lamb chops marinated with their unique blend of herbs and spices with a little sweet minty taste served with rice and vegetables on the side. Also try the Mexican pasta, unless you want something spicy for lunch. You can also spend the happy hours on the way to a wholesome dinner engagement. We took a 45 minute road trip with another van in tow on the way to a haven made the Ilocano way – Sitio Remedios. 7 houses in a 1.8 hectare property (twice the size of the Asian Institute of Management in front of Greenbelt 1 in Makati City), it is much like a Village, a town at the turn of the 20th century. 3 of the houses are two-storey, the rest are bungalows with either a single bedroom or twin bedrooms.

Each house is uniquely designed with antique furniture, dining tables, wooden living room sets, epoch fixtures such as chandeliers and picture frames and the staircases are not elaborately designed but they present a time where their imperfections is today’s perfection.

We have always described the provincial life as simple. If you are from a metropolis, then your description of the resort will be plainly – simple or uncomplicated – but definitely not backward. But Sitio Remdios cannot be described as idyllic nor rustic. For its time, the look and feel of the resort was considered urbane, cultured. For us to enjoy the serenity, it is recommended to spend some time to relax and enjoy Sitio Remedios.

The experience will not be cheap. Some of your files have duplicate copies. Whenever you use your yahoo messenger (YM) you send out some asian language speak to your friends and it turned out to be a virus. You then attempt to search for a cure that recommends you to use the registry editor and when you type regedit in the run box, it says that your Registry editor has been disabled by your administrator. You then try to find a registry editor in a free download site and when you try to download it shuts down your browser whether IE or Firefox. Your computer freezes and you try to reboot using the task manager.

Your anti-virus application don't work, and when you try to open your task manager, it says that the application has been disabled by your administrator. There are so many recommendations in the Internet for a way out of this mess. But as you go deeper into the problem, like I did for the past 3 days and believe me, we tried everything out there, there is probably one solution to this problem. Your computer has been infected by a ravmone and a sscvihost.exe application or simply called a worm virus.

The key is to deactivate sscvihost.exe so you can use the registry editor to remove the other sscvihost.exe, ravmone and autorun.ini files that have infected your registry. You can search thru the trendmicro site for the processexplorer.exe tool on zip file, download, run it and right click on sscvihost.exe and then click on the kill the application tab. Now you can start to manually clean up your registry. I recommend that you use Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus (W32.Imaun) so you can detect and remove the virus. And don't forget to scan your other files or external hard drive or even your flash drive, they might be infected. Hope this helps.
